eSIMs while traveling: everything you need to know (and why you’ll never go back)

If you're planning a trip abroad – maybe to Japan, the United States, or a European city – you've probably already asked yourself: how can I stay connected without spending a fortune on roaming?

In recent years, eSIMs have become the ideal solution for travelers. They're practical, flexible, and instantly available. But they're also easier to use than you might think. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything step by step.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card. You no longer need to insert a physical chip into your phone: just scan a QR code or enter a code manually, and within seconds you'll have an active data plan — wherever you are.

You don’t need to change your phone number or remove your current SIM card. You can even activate it just before your departure — or right after landing — avoiding any unexpected surprises.

Is your phone compatible?

Most likely yes. Today, the vast majority of modern smartphones support eSIM technology. Here’s an up-to-date list of compatible devices:

  • iPhone

All models from iPhone XS and newer, including SE and series 11 through 16.

Make sure your device is unlocked (Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock – it should say “No SIM restrictions”).

⚠️ Important: iPhones sold in mainland China may not support eSIM. In Hong Kong and Macao, compatibility depends on the model version.

  • Samsung

Compatible models: Galaxy S20–S25, Note20, Z Fold2 to Z Fold6, Z Flip3 to Z Flip6, and A54, A55, A35 (in selected regions like Europe, Korea, North America).

⚠️ Note: eSIM functionality may vary depending on the country of purchase.

  • Google Pixel

All models from Pixel 3 and up, including Pixel Fold, Pixel 6–9, 9 Pro XL.

⚠️ Some regional versions (Japan, Taiwan, Verizon US, etc.) of Pixel 3/3a may not support eSIM.

  • Xiaomi

Supported models include Mi 12T Pro, and the 13, 14, and 15 series, as well as Redmi Note 11/13/14 Pro+.

Again, compatibility may vary by region

Other compatible brands

  • Sony Xperia (Xperia 1 IV, 10 III, 10 IV, 10 V)
  • Motorola Razr (2019, 5G, Ultra)
  • Fairphone 4
  • Honor Magic 4/5 Pro
  • Microsoft Surface Pro X
  • DOOGEE V30, OnePlus 11, Oppo Find X3–X6
  • Rakuten, Sharp Aquos, Planet Gemini PDA, Nokia XR21, and more.

How do you activate an eSIM?

You have two methods, both very simple:

Method 1: QR code

  1. Go to Settings > Mobile networks > eSIM management
  2. Tap Add eSIM
  3. Scan the QR code you received by email
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions

Method 2: Manual code

  1. Tap “Add manually” on the same screen
  2. Enter the LPA: code we send you after your purchase
  3. Complete the activation

Tip: Activate your eSIM while connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. If you're flying, you can do it right after landing — directly from the airport!

eSIM vs Wi-Fi Router: freedom to move

If you’ve been to Japan, you’ve probably come across the classic pocket Wi-Fi router. It’s still a common option, but it has a big limitation: it only works if everyone stays close to the device.

With an eSIM, on the other hand, each person has their own personal, always-on connection. No need to stick with the group, no worries: you can go for a walk on your own, take photos, connect to Google Maps, or translate a menu — all without a hitch.
